Human Rights & Law Unit

About the Unit

Human Rights and Law Unit (HRLU) works towards securing better protection and promotion of human rights particularly for people belonging to the priority groups of the Institute. However, the Unit does not limit its activities to the strict confines of human rights and law alone. Through a process of synergy, the Unit has been able to widen its range of activities from the mere human rights and legal awareness education, counselling, etc., to the complex problems involving research, debate, and advocacy at various levels of action. Therefore, we make effort to trace human rights reading in various state policies, projects and the implications of the same in the social and economic life of people in general and the marginalized in particular.

Towards this end, the Unit has been able to work with people's movements especially in the area of development induced displacement related issues, like displacement caused by Narmada Dam, demolition of slums in various places of then National Capital Region, and supported human rights inquiry in atrocities against Dalits as well as poverty deaths among the tribals.  We have also been involved in two independent fact findings related to displacement caused by urban development policies and assisted groups.

Dignity at work, worker's rights, and social security of the unorganized sector are other areas of major engagement of the Unit. Besides the independent engagement of the Unit, efforts were made to network with other organizations in joint campaigns for the rights of the marginalized among all sections of society.
