Department of Library & Documentation Centre

History

The Institute attaches special importance to its library since the quality of its research partly depends on the availability of publications known for their depth of scholarship and creativity. The library had a small start in Pune where the Institute was initially located in the early fifties. It then came to Delhi when the Institute was shifted to the National Capital in the late fifties, first in South Extension where it was neighbor with the then South Campus of the Delhi University, and later to Lodi Road, New Delhi, where it is presently located. The Documentation centre was started only in 1976, when the Institute had settled down in the present premises of Lodi Road. In the early seventies FIDEL ROLS GOETZ, a philanthropist from Germany took interest in this library, which benefited from his generosity. Since then the library has been known as the FIDEL ROLS GOETZ Library.

The Library participates in the Union serial catalogue of ICSSR (Indian Council of Social Science Research). The Indian Library Association has recognized it as a specialized Library.

Broad prospective

The enormous growth in the information society has made the world a global village and there is an apparent death of distance. The convergence of computing and communications has also brought a radical change in the way libraries and information centres have been imparting information to the users. There is a paradigm shift from information based services to knowledge based services as knowledge is considered as the most powerful fact in the development of the economy of a nation and is the fourth wave experienced by human lives.
