About the Unit
The Rural & Urban Development Unit is playing an important role in responding to the socio-economic and political challenges faced by a newly emerging India.
The mandate of the Unit is to constantly scan and analyse the regional, national and global issues, and come up with various activities, programmes and relevant research and assessment studies, which then supports the task of advocacy of the Institute. The ultimate purpose of all development activities is to provide increasing opportunities to all people for a better life, achieve a greater degree of economic security, expand and improve facilities for education, health, nutrition, housing and above all to safeguard the
environment. An analysis of the developmental processes as well as their impact on various social groups in the country is crucial to understand the complexities of the problems faced by the country today.
There are a number of issues that face the country today, such as the impact of globalization on the poor, especially on the dalits, tribals, minorities, women, children, and other backward groups, after the emergence of the new economic policy. Increasing regional disparities, unemployment, displacement, environmental degradation, loss of livelihood, migration, farmers' suicides, starvation deaths, exploitation of women and children, and various forms of discrimination against the weaker sections of society are issues of serious concern.
In the context of present-day India, where 70 per cent of its one billion population are marginalised groups, the challenge to respond to the issues related to these is daunting and, therefore, the contribution of the Rural & Urban Development Unit assumes great significance.
